Picking an above ground pool for your backyard
A backyard pool can provide hours of enjoyment for you and your family, but
the decision to purchase and install one should be carefully considered. There
are many variables to contemplate before deciding on the perfect above ground
pool for your backyard.

Benefits of an Above Ground Pool
Above ground pools have gained popularity in the past decade. They are
relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of an inground pool, and they offer
the flexibility of easy removal if desired. A good quality pool should last 15
to 20 years; the liner may need to be replaced every five to seven years
depending on the quality and usage pattern. An above ground pool can be
installed easily and upkeep is minimal. An 18-ft. diameter pool including the
filter and pump will cost around $1,800 and up. Pools can be purchased in a kit
including the ladder, winter cover and/or vacuum or brought individually at a
specialty store. Additional accessories include a solar blanket to retain the
water temperature, a pool heater and an automatic pool cleaner.
City Regulations
Before deciding on the size and shape of your pool, research your city's
regulations regarding above ground pool installations. Some city bylaws mandate
that the pool must be situated a specific distance from all fences to prevent
someone from hopping the fence into the pool. For example, Brampton's
regulations state that the pool cannot be installed within four feet of any
fence, thus adding to the space needed to meet safety regulations. Your city may
also impose certain fence height requirements and require permits.
Sizing It Up
Above ground pools are available in various shapes and sized ranging from 12
to 30 feet in diameter, with varying water depths. Smaller pools less than 15
feet in diameter are referred to as 'splasher pools.' They're most popular with
families with young children, but can be quickly outgrown. Larger pools starting
with an 18-foot diameter or larger are the most popular size and are large
enough for kids and adults alike.
An above ground pool will take up a considerable amount of space, so
determine how much space you're willing to allot for the pool. Also, consider
the size of your family and your lifestyle. For a family of four, a pool
diameter of no less than 18 feet in diameter will allow enough room to swim and
frolic without overcrowding.
Above ground pools come in two basic shapes - round and oval. Steel walls,
wide top ledge and vertical steel posts support the pool. Oval-shaped pools have
evolved over the past few years and no longer require extra yard space for the
vertical steel posts.
Quality first
The life of an above ground pool will be greatly affected by the quality of
the material such as:
Liner Thickness: Choose a liner of 20-30mm thickness for durability and
longevity. The thicker the vinyl, the longer it will last.
Pool Frame and Supports: Opt for Steel top rails and wide vertical steel
posts that resist corrosion and rust to keep your pool sturdy and looking new.
Pump and Filter System: The pump circulates the water and the filter cleans
it. Choose a 1-hp pump minimum (for 18 ft.) and a sand filter if available,
which will filter and clean your water more effectively.
For a small investment, an above ground pool is an inexpensive alternative to
an inground pool and can be just the ticket to some backyard fun for you and
your family.
